Christopher Columbus La Tour was born at Utica, New
York, January 18, 1830. He died April 23, 1905 at the
home of his son, J. C. La Tour of Des Moines. Eurine
poisoning was the cause of his death.
- February 14, 1856 he was united in marriage to Miss
Marth Wheeler and to this union were born four children,
three sons and a daughter. The son Charles G. and
daughter Grace with their mother have preceded him to
the last rest. This leaves two sons to mourn the loss of
a loving father.
- He served over a year during the Rebellion in Company H
5th Wisconsin regiment and was honorably discharged and
until the death of his wife September 20, 1881, he lived
in Independence. Since then he has lived with his son J. C.
La Tour of Des Moines. For more than twenty years he has
lived in Oelwein until a year ago last January when he
moved to Des Moines with his son J. C. At the time of his
death he was seventy five years, three months and five days
old and until about a year ago he was a hale and hearty old
gentleman. Until the last two months he was not thought to
be seriously ill, but since then he failed rapidly. All that
medical aid and kind nursing could do seemed of no avail and
Easter morning he passed away. A prayer service was held in
Des Moines. Funeral services were held from the Presbyterian
church of this city yesterday, Rev. Reynolds of Des Moines,
preaching the sermon. He was intered in the Oelwein cemetery.
The sympathy of his many friends extended to the bereaved
relatives.Oelwein Register - 26 April 1905
