Edward Whitter 1837-1909 Civil War Veteran

Edwatd Whitter passed into the
long last sleep at his home on First
street N. Monday evening at 9:30 after
a few days illness of blood poisoning.
Slightly injuring a hand by
scratching it on a nail he paid no
attention to it till blood poisoning
ensued and the entire arm was
infected. He grew worse Sunday and
Monday there was little hope entertained
of his recovery. The last 'Services occur
from the Baptist church
Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock
Edward Whitter was born in Dubuque
county, Iowa in 1837 and was
therefore seventy-two years of age
at the time of his demise. In 1859
he was united in marriage to Miss
Elizabeth Greenley who with four
children survive to mourn his loss.
Two children died in early life. Those
remaining are John Whitter, Waterloo,
Mrs. John Woodward, Mrs. Will
Damon and Miss Julia Whitter, of
Oelwein. In 1876 lie moved with his
family to Arlington, residing there
till 1892 when they came to Oelwein
which has been the home of the family
since. In 1864 he enlisted in
Company C, Fifteenth Iowa Infantry
and was a brave soldier in the Civil
War, and was an active member of
the G .A. R. Post in this city. He
was well known here where he had
resided for the past seventeen years,
and the bereaved family have the
sympathy of many friends in their
sorrow.
