John W. Stogden was born in Dallas Highlands County
Ohio, June 24, 1837 and died April 6, 1921 at his
home 209 Sixth Avenue East, Oelwein, Ia. after a
lingering illness. At the time of his death he was
eighty three years, nine months and thirteen days old.
-He was the oldest son of a family of nine children, six
of whom preceded him to the Great Beyond. One
sister, Mrs. Mary Moomaw, resides at Lebanon, Ohio,
another, Mrs. Sarah Anderson at Minneapolis, Minn. He
grew to manhood in Dallas. At the age of 24 years he
enlisted in Co. G 2nd Indiana Cavalry. He served this
country three years, being discharged on October 4, 1864.
-On December 1, 1964, he was united in marriage with
Margaret E. Hammer of Westboro. To this union were born
nine children, seven having passed on to await his
coming. He leaves to mourn his loss a wife, two
daughters, Mrs. Edith Bennett of Randalia and Mrs. Belle
Strain of this city, also six grandchildren and two great-
grandchildren, besides many other relatives and friends.
-Funeral services were held Friday at the home and at the M. E.
Church, Rev. W. C. Cleworth, officiating. An honorary escort of
American Legion was in attendance and a firing squad was
present at the grave. The members of the G. A. R. Post and
