Saturday noon the remains of Mrs.
Annie* Carpenter, arrived from
Okmulgee, Oklahoma, and after
short services were laid to rest in the
Elgin cemetery.
Annie Dowse-Carpenter died at
Okmulgee, Oklahoma, Thursday
April 18, 1912, aged 71 years. She
was the daughter of Philip Dowse,
Sr. and Rebecca Dowse and was born,
in England,
Her parents settled in Auburn,
Fayette County, Iowa in the Fifties.
Her father had charge of the Auburn
flouring mills. Annie Dowse married
E. R. Carpenter, who survives her,
September 11, 1880 and they were
the parents, of two children, Edith'
May, now in Rome, Italy, and Roy
D. a business man residing at
Okmulgee, Oklahoma. In 1862 Mr.
and Mrs. Carpenter moved to this
city. Mr. Carpenter for some years
was a member of the firm of Dowse
& Carpenter, proprietors of the flouring
mill. Mr. and Mrs. Carpenter
lived in West Union during the time
Mr. Carpenter was County Treasurer
of Fayette County. About twenty five
years ago they moved to Rock
Rapids, Iowa, where they resided
several years. The past five years
they have lived in Oklahoma. Mrs.
Carpenter was a frail woman but she
had great ambition. She was noted
for her intelligence and keeping
abreast with the development of the
age in which she lived.
Annie Dowse Carpenter now rests
in the beautiful little cemetery at
Elgin among the friends of her early
years who will long remember her
many virtues.
Those who accompanied the remains
to this city were her husband
her son Samuel and wife, and their
son-in-law, Mr. Fuller, all of Okmulgee,
Oklahoma; Mrs. Dowse and son,
George, of Oelwein; Mrs. Burlingham
of Chilicothe, Mo., Hon. Wm. E.
Fuller and E. M. Phillips and wife,
