Barbara Schreiner, born Bauer,
first saw the light of day on March
24, in 1837, in Canton Zuruch, Switzerland.
In February 1859 she came to this
country and was married, October
I5, 1863, to her now sorrowing husband,
C. H. Schreiner. They became
the parents of seven children,
three of which died in infancy and
two in early manhood. Two daughters
are living; Mrs. J. G. Draewel
of Elgin and Mrs. Emilie Borgman,
of Enterprise, Kansas.
In the fall of the year 1873 she was
converted and baptized by Brother
Haselbuhn, joining the church at
St. Louis, Mo. In 1879 they removed
to Kansas settling at Dorance, where
they lived for thirty years and suffered
many hardships. One of their greatest
sorrows was to see their sons Hermann
and Otto in their graves, the one at the
age of 29 and the other at 41.
From 1899-1909 they lived with
their son Otto and his wife Lizzie,
where they had a nice home and
loving care. The last few years
they lived with their daughter
Lydia and their son-in-law, J. G.
Draewel. "Mama Schriener" delighted
in attending church services,
gladly invited others to join her in
this attendance, distributed tracts
and bore witness for the Saviour at
every opportunity.
She died April 20, 1912, at the age
of 75 years and 27 days. The end
came quickly as had been her desire
voiced in her prayers. Her last
words were, "OLord, take me home"
In the German Baptist church in
Elgin, where she was a beloved member,
a memorial service was held, on
Monday at which Brother John
Miller delivered the address. That
afternoon the earthly form was
taken to Kansas and interred in the
cemetery at Dorrance where her
children are sleeping the last long
sleep.The Elgin Echo - 25 April 1912
