Mrs. Alevesa Keurtz~Miller, the
mother of Mrs. J. B. Smith, who was
taken to Manchester for burial on our
last publication day, had seen almost a
century of American history. She was
born in Pennsylvania in 1803, and
on the day of her death, April 11, was
96 years and 23 days of age. She was
united in marriage to Joseph Miller
Feb 8, 1825. They moved from Pennsylvania
to Illinois in 1856, and five
years later moved to Iowa. She has
been a resident of the state since that
time or thirty-seven years. Four years
after coming to Iowa she was left a
widow, her husband dying at Earlville.
She was the mother of twelve children
six girls and six boys—nine of whom
are living to mourn her loss. There
are more than a hundred descendants
living; besides her children, there are
58 grandchildren and 47 great-grandchildren.
She united with the Presbyterian
church at an early age, and
continued steadfast to the end of her
life she was truly able to say:
"Even down to old age all my people
shall prove my sovereign, eternal,
unchangeable love; and then when my
hairs shall their temples adorn, like
lambs shall they still in my bosom be
borne."
When the world had moved on by
her, and her life like a garment folded
and laid away with a beautiful faith
she patiently abided the coming of the
King. For some years she has made
her home with her daughter, Mrs. J. B.
Smith.
The funeral services were conducted
at Manchester by the pastor of the
Presbyterian church, Rev. Hamilton,
the interment taking place at Earlville,
her old home, by the side of her husband.
