—J. C. Rosencrans, who at one time
was a resident of this place, died at the
Soldiers Home Wednesday. The remains
were brought here and laid beside
his wife in the cemetery at this
place. He was 68 years old.
Mr. Rosencrans went to Marshalltown
about four weeks ago to receive
treatment for heart trouble. J. C.
Rosencrans was born in Cattaraugus
county, New York, February 2, 1830.
He went to Michigan.in an early day,
where he remained until the early sixties,
and while there united in marriage
to Miss Martha Ferguson, who was
a helpful companion until her death,
which occurred at this place eight
years ago. He served in the war of the
rebellion, enlisting in the Sixth regiment,
Michigan volunteers. He moved
to Buchanan county in 1866. and resided
in Jesup and Independence for many
years. For five years he was a resident
of Oelwein. For the past three or four
years he has been in Kansas, returning
to Independence from that state June
1st. He leaves two children, Frank
Rosencrans, of Independence, and Mrs.
D. V. Wheeler, of Gladstone, Michigan.Oelwein Register - 31 Aug 1898
