Monday we attended the funeral of
James Stewart, and old and prominent
resident of the county. Several years
ago he was county treasurer, and later
manager of the poor farm. For years
he has been a guard at Annamosa State
prison in the tailoring department
His death occurred very suddenly Friday,
the 2lst, caused from neuralgia of
the heart. He was a member, and last
year commander of Fred Steele Post at
Anamosa. J. McCord. of that Post
was his G. A. R. escort. His brother
Wm. and wife, from near Maynard
his daughter and husband, Mr. Hammond,
of Joliet, Illinois, Mrs. Stewart
his sister, Mrs. Gardner and daughter,
Mrs Shaler, came with the remains to
Donnan where a few of his old comrades
met and escorted them to West
Union, decorating the casket with the
old flag that he marched and fought
under. The funeral services were held
in the Presbyterian church, in charge
of the Odd Fellows, of which Order he
was a prominent member; the sermon
being by Rev. Noel. The pall bearers
were members of his old company, C,
12th Iowa, N H Spears. G E Comstock,
G H and R Z Latimer, R D Williams,
Simeon Gifford, P R Ketchum and H J
Grannis. Deceased and Grannis were
mess mates during the six months in
Confederate imprisonment in '62. Deceased
was in his 63rd year, and leaves
a wife and two daughters, Mrs Hammond
and Mrs Robt Vansickle, and two
