CARPENTER, ROSS

In spite of the hopes of loved ones
and well wishes of a host of friends,
the spirit of Mrs. Alice Carpenter
took its flight to the realms of endless
day on Sunday evening, October 10th,
at 5:30, after an illness of a few brief
weeks, with typhoid fever. Deceased
was born in Ripley county, Indiana,
October 20, 1847, her maiden name
being Alice J. Ross. She removed to
Iowa with her parents in 1855, settling
upon a farm in this county, that
her father had taken up. Here, in
her 16th year, she became a Christian,
which she lived to the end- On June
7tb, 1866, she was united in marriage
with George E. Carpenter, a veteran
of the 9th Iowa infantry. The husband
and father proceeded her to the
silent land December 21, 1880. just a
few weeks before the birth of the
youngest daughters, twins, Maude and
Blanche, leaving to the widow's care
two sons and eight daughters, in all
her struggles, difficulties, labors and
self denials she kept her abiding faith
in God, and raised her family almost
to manhood and womanhood, and
equipped them for the battle of life
alone. How well she fulfilled every
obligation of a mother and counselor
for her loved ones the people of this
community, where she lived so long,
know full well. An aged mother,
three brothers, two sisters, with these
ten children, and a very large circle of
relatives and friends mourn her departure.
Eternity alone will reveal
her worth and the work she hath done.
The funeral services were conducted
at the Christian Tabernacle Tuesday
afternoon, being conducted by Rev.
Ross, the pastor, who used a verse
from the book of Revelations as his
text, and spoke very feelingly and on
practical lines. There was a very
large attendance, many beautiful floral
offerings. Slid was laid to rest in
Oran cemetery; the exercises at the
grave being conducted by the Royal
Neighbors, of which Order she was a
member. There were fifty teams in
the procession, and many other evidences
of the esteem in which she was
held in this community.
