An Obituary NoticePassing of a Respected Citizen of Oran.
"James McCormick has passed away," were the sad words spoken from friend to friend, when it became known that James McCormick, a true friend and affectionate brother and a loving and dutiful son, had breathed forth his soul to his maker whom he had always served.
He had been a member of the Roman Catholic church from infancy and spent his youthful and manhood days in cheerfully responding to the duties of his religion, the last holy rites of which comforted and strengthened him in his last moments.
James McCormick died at the home farm, 1 1/2 miles east of Oran on Monday, September 15, 1913, at the age of 38 years and 15 days, after a short but severe illness of less than a week, which was borne without a murmur or complaint, speaking words of comfort and cheer to his aged parents, to within a few hours of his death.
After his illness became apparent all that loving hands and medical skill could do was done but to no avail.
On Sunday, September 14, as a last hope, he submitted to an operation for peritonitis, having first received the last sacraments of the church from his pastor, Rev. Donahue. He rallied from the operation and spoke cheerful words to those around him. He died Monday forenoon, fully resigned to the will of God.
He is mourned by his aged parents, Mr. and Mrs. Martin McCormick, and six sisters, Theresa at home; Mrs. Sarah Sandage, Chicago; Mrs. Nelle Holmes and Mrs. Cassie O'Brien, Cedar Rapids; Mrs. Maggie Decker, Emporia, Kans.; Mrs. Mary Robbins of Iowa Falls; and by one brother, John of Manly, Iowa; also by Frank Kane, a cousin who has always made his home with the family and by a large host of friends who valued him as a sincere and faithful friend.
The esteem in which he was held was shown by the large concourse of relatives and friends that gathered to attend the last services which were held at the Immaculate Conception church at Fairbank, Rev. Wm. Donahue officiating. Interment at the Catholic cemetery. May he rest in peace.
