Nellie Sophia Shippy 1863-1941

In the evening of January 11,
1941- at 7:45 occurred the death of
Mrs. Nellie Sophia Harwood Shippy
a pioneer woman of Bremer
and Fayette Counties at her home
at Oran.
She was born at Eleroy, Illinois
January 21, 1863 and after the
death of her father, William Newton
Ferry Harwood. a soldier of
the Civil war, her mother brought
her family of four children to
Iowa and established a home at
Grove Hill, near home of the Harwood
grandparents where they
lived for many years.
On February 15, 1887 at Oeiwein,
Iowa Nellie was married to
Elmer E. Shippy to whom were
born two children.
Her mother passed away in the
year of 1897, her brother Lewis
in 1921, Frank in 1927, William in
1935, and last Saturday evening
Nellie went to join the rest of her
family.
In 1937 Mr. and Mrs. Shippy
celebrated their Fiftieth wedding
anniversary.
She is survived by her husband,
one son Earl and wife of
Oran, a baby daughter having
died in infancy. She was a devoted
wife and a kind and loving mother.
Mrs. Shippy was a woman of
quite and somewhat retiring disposition
but leaves a host of loyal
and devoted friends to mourn her
death. She was a member of the
Order of the Eastern Star, was active
in church and community
work as long as her health permitted.
Funeral services were held
Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock
from the Oran Methodist Church
and interment in the Fairbank
cemetery.—Con.
