Tuesday evening Wm. J. Blake,
well known in this city and county,
passed away after an illness of several
weeks. The cause of his death was typhoid-
malarial fever. The funeral
will occur next Saturday at 10 a.m.,
and will be conducted by Elder Jones,
a clergyman of the Primitive Baptist
church.
Wm. J. Blake was born in Waterloo,
N. Y. January 18, 1853, and was therefore
nearly 49 years of age at the time
of his death. In 1853 he came with his
parents to Dunkerton, Iowa, where the
family resided for many years. In 1890
he came to Oelwein where he has
since resided. He was proprietor of a
machine and blacksmith shop, owned
considerable property in the city, and
was one of the prominent citizens of
Oelwein. He was universally esteemed
as an honorable, upright man,
and numbered his friends by the score.
He was of that highest type of man, a
Christian gentleman. It has been said
that an honest man is the noblest work
of God and Mr. Blake filled that description.
For a number of years he
had been a consistent member of the
Primitive Baptist church, of this city,
and on New Year's eve he passed
away, soothed and sustained by an unfaltering
trust in Him who died that
all who believe in Him and follow His
teachings may have everlasting life.
Wm. J. Blake was united in marriage
with Miss Hannah Mclntosh
November 10, 1875. Three children
were born to them, Florence M., Morton
T., and Jennie M. Blake. His
mother, Mrs. Thos, Blake is a resident
of Waterloo. Three sisters reside in
the same city. One sister resides in
Tennesee, and two brothers, George
and Leonard reside in this city. The
sincere sympathy of a large circle of
friends including the publishers of this
paper are extended to the bereaved
family in their affliction.
