William J. Bentley, aged 83 years,
six months and one day, died at the
home of his son, Abe Bentley, Monday
night, after an illness of some weeks,
with dropsy and old age. He was
born in Genesee county, New York,
and early in life moved to Wisconsin.
In 1856 he came to Iowa, and settled
on a farm near Fairbank, suffering
the privations and discouragements of
those early days, and had witnessed the
wonderful growth and development of
this country, and shared in the same.
He had been a resident of Oelwein
about twenty years, and since the
death of his loved companion, who
died seventeen years ago he had made
his home with his son Abe and family.
Three children were all his home were
ever blessed with, all of whom survive
him, they being all residents of this
city, his sons Abe and William and
daughter Mrs. Jerry Richards. Although
having passed far beyond the
three score years and ten years allotted
to the age of man, he was always
hale and hearty and retained all of his
faculties almost until the last. He
had been a consistent member of the
Regular Baptist church for fifty-live
years. The funeral services were held
at Grace M. E. church Wednesday afternoon,
being conducted by Rev. O. W.
Hose, and were largely attended.Oelwein Register - 23 April 1896
