Mrs. Auguste Zatsch, sixth child of Frederick
Thorman and his wife Marie, nee Meyer, was born
June 21, 1836 in the province of Brandenburg,
Germany. Her childhood and youth were spent in
the old Fatherland. On her seventeenth birthday
her parents and family migrated to America, settling
in Dubuque county, Iowa. A few years later they
removed to Fayette county where her family moved
onto a homestead some 4.5 miles from what is now
Oelwein. March 3, 1859 she was united in marriage
to Frederick Zatsch. The marriage was blessed by four
children; Clara, formerly wife of Fred Schwartz who
preceded her mother in death some 34 years; Mrs. Selma
Rechkemmer who now mourns her mother's loss; Agnes,
who died as a child, having been fatally injured at the
mill in Fontana Park; and Fred who went to his rest in 1923.
After their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Zatsch lived at
various places in Buchanan and Fayette counties. For 20
years they made their home in what is now called Fontana
Park. From the park they moved to Oelwein, where she lived
with the exception of 6 years spent on a farm near Oelwein,
until the time of her death.
Her beloved husband departed this life May 22, 1909. Some
27 years ago she fractured her hip. Though she could, after
convalescing, get about, she was crippled and handicapped.
Her daughter ministered unto her up to the hour of her
departure. Commending her spirit into God's keeping, she
departed this life Thursday morning.
She leaves to mourn her loss, besides a host of friends and
other relatives, her daughter, Mrs. Selma Rechkemmer, three
grandsons, Herbert, Paul and Robert Rechkemmer, three great
grandchildren by blood relationship and two great grandchildren
by marriage; two brothers, John Thorman of Texas, and Julius
Thormann of St. Cloud, Minnesota.
Last services from her daughters home and from the
Lutheran church. Rev. E. J. Braulick, officiating, Interment
was made in Woodlawn cemetery.
