NICHOLS, SMITH

'••-•• A startling sensation was made in
the Nichols neighborhood on Wednesday
by the burning of Clifford Nichol's
barn, by himself, and his committing
suicide while it was on fire. Family
trouble and temporary insanity are
the supposed causes. He was a son of
Eleazer Nichois, so long known in this
county. He had been talking strangely
the fore part of the day, and after
dinner went to the barn and fired it,
came to the door; and bowed to his
wife, returned inside, cut his throat,
and seized one of his horses by the
neck and was dragged outside about
thirty feet, when he released his hold
and fell on his face. Having severed
the jugular on both sides of his neck,
he was not long in dying. This information
we get from Charley Smith.
