Agnes Helgerson

Agnes Henrietta Helgerson, daughter of Peter and Laura (Kleppe) Helgerson, was born on Sept. 29, 1915 in Dover township. She died October 26, 1995 at Good Samaritan Home in West Union, where she had lived since December 1994.

Agnes was baptized October 31, 1915 and confirmed September 28, 1930. She was a life-long member of First Lutheran Church, rural Ossian and received her education at the Dover #6 rural school.

She worked as a hired girl for many years and for many different people. She also kept house for her brothers until she moved to West Union. She then worked at the Town House Cafe and babysat. Agnes was particularly fond of babysitting and of the children in her care. She also enjoyed sewing and embroidery and made great cookies. Eventually, Agnes had to quit many of her favorite activities because of poor health. She continued to look to the church for her social and spiritual involvement, being active with ladies aid, her church circle, family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and two brothers, Alvin Helgerson and Marvin Helgerson. She is survived by two brothers, Palmer Helgerson of Oelwein, and Clarion Helgerson of Clermont; two sisters, Mayme Walvatne and Doris Sabor, West Union and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Agnes Helgerson were held Monday October 30, 1995 at First Lutheran Church, rural Ossian. Pastor Charles M. Smith officiated. Art and Clarence Amundson were vocalists. Helen Guyer was the organist. Casket bearers were Gene Dietzenbach, Cloy Kuhse, Kenneth Ellingson, Jamie Dietzenbach, Leroy Soppe and Ronnie Helgerson. Burnham and Wood Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the First Lutheran Church cemetery.
