Mrs. Sarah McSweeny 1871 - 1960

Funeral services were held for Mrs. Sarah McSweeny,
88, Monday morning at St. Francis Church in Fayette
with Father L. Shekleton officiating at requiem high
mass. Mrs. McSweeny died at the home of her son
and daughter-in-law near Randalia on Friday, July 1,
where she had been taken in failing health.

The daughter of James and Julia Lynch, she was
born December 13, 1871, Smithfield township, near
Maynard, Iowa. She was educated in a rural school in
Fayette County, later attending the Ainsworth Normal
School in West Union.

She was married to John S. McSweeny of Oelwein,
October 11, 1894 in Fayette. They were the parents
of three children, James, Mary and Leo. Her husband,
Mary and Leo preceded her in death. She was a Gold
Star Mother. Her son, Leo died in World War I.

After their marriage they lived near Oelwein in
Jefferson township until 1911 when they moved to
their farm near Randalia and from there, in 1929, she
and her husband moved to Fayette.

She was a member of the Rosary Society, the
American Legion Auxiliary and a charter member of the
Catholic Daughters of America.

Surviving is one son, James, five grandchildren
and five great-grandchildren. Burial was in St. Francis
Cemetery near Fayette. Pall bearers were Clyde Wilson,
Lee Jellings, John McFadden, Everett Sinnott, Ellis
Thompson and Fred Ehlers.
