E. L. "Diz" Dean

Funeral services for E. L. "Diz" Dean were held Saturday, October 12, 2002, at 1:30 p.m. in the West Clermont Lutheran Church in Clermont. The Reverend Galen Kuhens officiated, assisted by the Reverend LeRoy Bell. The Schutte Funeral and Cremation Service of Clermont was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in Gods Acres Cemetery at Clermont, where military honors were performed by the Sheehan-Olson Post No. 375 of Clermont. Casket bearers were Dan Dean, Howard Dean, Aaron Dean, John Rewerts, Mike Olson,John Shipton, Don Kuennen, Ronald Oakland.

E. L. "Diz" Dean, the son of Glen Arba Dean and Florence Minor (nee Evans) Dean, was born October 31, 1917, at Sloan, Iowa. He passed away Thursday, October 10, 2002, in the Good Samaritan Center at Postville, Iowa.

He was baptized in the Christian Church at Sloan, Iowa. He was graduated from the Sloan High School in 1935 and Buena Vista College at Storm Lake, Iowa in 1939. He taught and coached at the Gruver and Coon Rapids High Schools.

On July 7, 1941 Diz was married to May Dawn Smith of West Union, Iowa, at Jackson, Minnesota. They had two children, Dorothea Dawn and Glen Elbert. He enlisted in the U. S. Navy in October of 1941, served in the Pacific theater and was honorably discharged on December 10, 1945, as a full Lieutenant.

Diz farmed in the West Union and Postville areas and was actively engaged in the auction and real estate business. He was involved in the Iowa Cutting Horse Association and was the first member inducted into the Iowa Cutting Horse Association Hall of Fame. He was also a member of the Whistlin' Bit Saddle Club, the Iowa High School Rodeo Association, Fayette County Board of Review, Fayette County Fair Board, and served on the Clermont Town Council. Diz was a member of the West Clermont Lutheran Church and the Sheehan-Olson American Legion, Post No. 375.

He is preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Harold and Darrel.

He is survived by his wife, May Dawn, a daughter, Dody (Curt) Olson of Cedar Falls, Iowa, and a son, Glen (Judy) Dean of Postville, six grandchildren, Miekka Olson (Jeff) Bell of Cedar Falls, Shelli Olson (Mitch) Majeski of Fort Collins, Colorado, Eric (Dani) Olson of Cedar Falls, Jennifer Dean (fiance, Tom Acton) of Des Moines, Jody Dean (Jon) McKowen of Fairbanks, Iowa, Jed Dean of Postville, and three great grandchildren, Madison Bell, and Ryene and Hudson Majeski.
