Susie Strawn Oakes 1893 - 1972

HAZLETON (Special) —Susie
Viola Oakes, daughter of William
and Nellie Recoy Strawn was
born October 9, 1893 in Scott
township, Fayette County, and
died March 21, 1972 at Mercy
Hospital, Oelwein.
On February 21, 1911 she was
united in marriage to Thomas A.
Oakes, Sr. at West Union, Iowa.
They moved on a farm north of
Stanley where they resided until
March 1944 when they moved to
Hazleton.

She was a cook for the hot lunch
program at the Hazleton school
for over 20 years. She was a
member of Iowa Chapter No. 381
Order of the Eastern Star, and
attended the Trinity United
Methodist church of Hazleton
where she was a faithful worker
in the WSCS.

She was preceded in death by
her parents and husband,
Thomas, Sr.: and two children,
Donald and Marvin; and six
brothers and three sisters.

She is survived by three
daughters. Mrs. (Viola) Ralph
Russell, Waterloo; Mrs.
(Marion) Ralph Palmer, Independence;
Mrs. (Virginia)
Harold Lohman, Marion; and six
sons, Ralph, Fayette; Roy,
Waterloo; Leland, Randalia;
Melvin, Oelwein: Thomas, Jr..
Oelwein; Charles, Bloomington,
Minn.; and one brother, Vern
Strawn. Dyersville; 18 grandchildren
and 13 great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held
Friday afternoon March 24. 1972
at Trinity United Methodist
church with the Rev. Ronald
Robbins officiating. Mrs. Bert
Brown was at the organ and
accompanied Mrs. Miles Gardner
when she sang "Beautiful Isle
of Somewhere" and "The Old
Rugged Cross."
Interment was made in the
Florai Hills Memorial Garden.
The pall bearers were Arnold
Kaune. Keith Richards. Nelson
Kjar. Owen Snively. Ed Silvers
and William Murphy.
