Joint funeral services for Lila and Lester Crain were held Monday, September 30, 1985 at the Clermont Community Center, Clermont, Iowa. Services were led by Henry Wahls, Paul Elliott, Leonard DeBuhr, and John Slabaugh. Muehlethaler's Funeral Home, Elgin, Iowa was in charge of arrangements.

Lila Ruth Gruver Barnhouse Crain, the daughter of Lew and Mary (Shaw) Gruver, was born February 23, 1915 near Elgin. On October 17, 1934, she was married to John Barnhouse at her parent's home. They had 5 children: Lew James Barnhouse, Arvada, Colorado, Mary (Mrs. Charles Sandeen) Lanesboro, Minnesota, Wanda (Mrs. Kenneth Flatland) Cresco, Iowa, Fred Barnhouse, Marion, Iowa, John Paul Barnhouse, Denver, Colorado. They lived in Clermont, Iowa most of their married lives.

Lila is survived by her five children, 15 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, and a brother, Will Gruver of West Union, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband John on July 7, 1976; two brothers, Elmer and Robert Gruver and four sisters, Lilly Baldwin and three in infancy.

Lila married Lester Crain on July 17, 1969.

Lila's casket bearers were: Dean Hyde, Lee Hendrickson, Victor Collins, Mac Duff, Bob Smid, and Norris Walvatne. Interment was in God's Acres Cemetery, Clermont, Iowa.

Note: The newspaper obituary does NOT list the death date or the circumstances of her death. I may be mistaken, but I believe Lila and Lester Crain were killed in a car accident between West Union, Iowa and Clermont, Iowa on US Highway 18, but I do not know the date.
