Avis L. Lauer Buchtela, 91, formerly of Fayette, Iowa, died of natural causes Monday, Nov. 8, 2010, at Good Samaritan Society - West Union.

Funeral services for Avis were held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, November 11, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Eldorado.

Burnham-Wood & S.K. Rogers Funeral Homes, West Union, was in charge of arrangements.

Avis Lucille (Hayes) Lauer Buchtela was born Aug. 24, 1919, in rural Hazleton to Herbert and Ada (Smith) Hayes.

On June 26, 1941, she was married to Oliver Lauer in Eldorado. He passed away on July 13, 1946.

Avis was married to Leo Buchtela on March 16, 1962. The couple made their home on a farm in Fayette.

Avis taught in rural schools and later in elementary schools. In 1940, she earned her two-year teaching certificate from State Teachers College, which is now the University of Northern Iowa. Avis earned her four-year degree from Upper Iowa University in 1977.

A member of the Fayette Quilting Guild, she also enjoyed crafting, crocheting, gardening and dancing.

In addition to her first husband, Oliver, Avis was preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by her husband, Leo; two sons, Vernon (Linnea) Lauer of Forest, Va., and Jerry (Judy) Lauer of Independence; a daughter, Lynette (Dale) Mork of West Union; two sisters, Elizabeth Threadgill of Eddy, Texas, and Eleanor Earley of Buda, Texas; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
