Charles Arthur Werden, 72, of Maynard, Iowa died Tuesday, August 6, 1996 at Palmer Lutheran Health Center in West Union, Iowa. Charles was born July 6, 1924 in Baldwin to Walter and Jessie (Graves) Werden. He graduated from Baldwin High School in 1942 and on October 24, 1943 he married Virginia McPherson in San Luis Obispo, California.

He served with the U.S. Army in communications from 1943-1945 in the South Pacific. After the service, he worked for Deckers as a livestock buyer in Maquoketa and Dubuque. They moved to Maynard and Charles worked as a livestock buyer for Dubuque Pack from 1953-1961 when he began working with Interstate Producers in Waukon. He worked with Pattison Brothers of Fayette until retiring in 1994.

Charles was a member of the Emmanuel United Methodist Church in Maynard, Maynard American Legion Post 245 and Hebron Masonic Lodge 374 A.F. & A.M. of Oelwein.

Surviving are his wife; two daughters, Vicki Sinclair of Blue Springs, MO, and Faye Nolting of Waukon; two sons, Mark of Ridgeway and Bruce of Fayette; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and three brothers, John of Little Rock, AR, Andy of Galesville, WI, and Bill of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Gail Sue and a grandson.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Friday August 9 at Emmanuel UMC with the Rev. Bruce Bane officiating. Burial was in Buck Horn Cemetery in rural Maquoketa, with arrangements by Jamison-Schmitz Funeral of Maynard. Maynard American Legion Post 245 conducted a military memorial service at the funeral home.
