A. L. Hockings was born on June 26, 1860 on a farm
west of Oelwein, part of which is now Woodlawn
cemetery, and died at his home on South Frederick
on July 28, 1939, at the age of seventy-nine years,
one month and two days.
He was married to Clara Maye Paign in 1880. She
preceded him in death on April 3, 1912.
He established his first home on the farm on which
he was born and continued farming until he was
elected sheriff of Fayette county. Later he became a
peace officer in Oelwein. He thus lived his entire
life in Fayette County ---- in Oelwein and West Union.
On October 4, 1921, he was married to Mrs. Ora
Johnson, who has been a great comfort to him
through the days of his illness, ministering to him
day and night.
He leaves to mourn his passing his wife; three daughters,
Mrs. Nellie Tyler and Mrs. Gladys Green of California and
Mrs. Hazel Hintz of Oelwein; (one daughter, Frankie May,
died Aug. 10, 1886); six grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs.
Phebie Yarwood of Mankato, Minnesota and Mrs. Minnie
Brown of Oelwein; two step-daughters, Mrs. Harry Potter
and Mrs. John Kautenbaugh, one step-son, Earl Blaisdell,
all of Oelwein; and three step-grandchildren, of whom
he was as fond as he was of his own.
Funeral services were held at the Hintz Funeral home on
Sunday, July 30 at 3 pm, conducted by Rev. L. W. Hauter.
Burial at Woodlawn cemetery.
