Funeral services will be Wednesday,
Dec. 16, Hintz funeral
home in Oelwein for a well-known
Oelwein educator, Roger Northrop,
56. He died Sunday, Dec. 13
at St. Luke's Hospital, Milwaukee,
Wis. Northrop resided at 1107 1st
St. NE.
Northrop underwent heart surgery
at Milwaukee, Friday, Dec.
4. He had been hospitalized there
since the operation.
He started as a mathematics and
science teacher in the Oelwein
school district in 1942. He was
named Junior High principal in
1946 and served in that capacity until
1956. In 1956 he was named Senior
High principal and held the
position until 1965.
Northrop resigned in 1965 and
served two years as Wapsie Valley
superintendent. He accepted
the Danville superintendent's position
in 1967 and served three
years, completing the contract
last June. He returned to Oelwein
last summer and began teaching
mathematics in the Oelwein Junior
High in August, 1970.
Survivors include his wife,
Jean; a son, Randy, Emmetsburg;
a daughter, Mrs. Nancy McMahon,
Iowa City; a sister, Mrs. Betty
Jordan, Marshalltown; and two
grandchildren: The body will lie
in state after 4 p.m. Tuesday.
