Robert Shaffer 1930 - 2010

Robert "Bob" Shaffer, age 80, of Dodgeville, Wisconsin, peacefully and gracefully left this world on Saturday, September 18, 2010 at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Robert "Bob" was born on September 9, 1930 in rural Wadena, Iowa, the son of Lester and Emma Shaffer.

Robert served 2 years in the Army and was in reserves for 4 years following. He met and was married to Elaine Bruns at Immanuel Evangelical Church in Latimer, Iowa on August 1, 1959. They started their lives in West Union where he started his life in the concrete business; in 1973, his work brought him and his family to Dodgeville, where they have remained. After settling in Dodgeville, he joined the local Volunteer Fire Department in 1974 -1991, where he met and became friends with many fellow Fire Fighters. He was also an active member in the local Legion and 40-8 clubs. He was also very active in the Grace Lutheran Church, serving as President and council member. Robert worked for Kowalski - Kieler from 1975 - 1998, after retiring he went to for a local car wash where remained until his death.

Robert is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Elaine; his four wonderful children, Jon (Jennifer) Shaffer, Julie Woerpel (Brian Roh), of Dodgeville, Joye (Mike) Gibbs of Springfield, MI, and Janice (Rob) Wand, of Gratiot; 9 grandchildren, Justin Shaffer, Tyler Woerpel, Ashley (Andy) Pitzen, Justin (Lydia) Davis-Gibbs, Shawn Woerpel, Sarah (Jarvis Witters) Woerpel, Jennifer Davis-Gibbs, Dylan Shaffer and Hunter Wand; other relatives and friends.

"Poppa" as we loved to call him, is also survived by his "little peanuts", Jacen, Ashton, and Zane, along with his "little sweetheart",, Jaydee and step great grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Kaden.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Pamela, his 3-sisters, 1 brother, along with many other family members and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 22, 2010 at Grace Lutheran Church in Dodgeville, where Military Rites accorded by the Dodgeville Area Veterans will follow the service. Rev. Steven Kottke will officiate. Friends may call from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday at the Gorgen-McGinley & Ayers Funeral Home in Dodgeville and from 10:00 a.m. until time of services on Wednesday at the church.
