Leon Kuennen was born in St. Lucas on June 28, 1934, to Clem and Mathilda (Croatt) Kuennen. He was baptized and confirmed in his faith at St. Luke Catholic Church in St. Lucas.

He graduated from St. Luke's School and helped on the family farm until he entered the U.S. Army.

Leon served his basic training at Camp Chaffee, Ark., did M.P. training at Ft. Gordon, Ga., and served as an M.P. at Valley Forge Army Hospital in Pennsylvania. He then served 18 months in Berlin, Germany, before his discharge in February 1958.

On June 11, 1958, Leon was united in marriage with Mary Jo Schmitz at St. Mary's Church in Waucoma. They first started farming in St. Lucas. In January 1961 the couple moved to their present farm, where Leon enjoyed the remainder of his life in the rolling land south of Ossian.

Leon liked green machinery, both big and small. He was an avid hunter and also enjoyed woodworking. He liked gardening and helping Mary Jo with canning and freezing produce. He reluctantly watched the Cubs on TV with Mary Jo, but he enjoyed watching the old Westerns.

Leon was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Ruth Oyloe and Edna Holthaus; and a brother-in-law, Linus Huinker.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Jo; three brothers, Clarence (Geneva) Kuennen and Gerald (Margaret) Kuennen, both of St. Lucas, and James (Donna) Kuennen of Cresco; three sisters, Adella Mitchell of Lime Springs, Delores Huinker of Calmar and Arlene (Ralph) Imoehl of Tucson, Ariz.; two brothers-in-law, Gerald Oyloe of Mesa, Ariz., and Cyril Holthaus of Ossian; and two sisters-in-law, Phyllis (Robert) Boeding of Lawler and Carol (Terry) Costigan of St. Lucas.
