William John Schaufenbuel

William John Schaufenbuel, 80, died Monday, Jan. 11, 1999, at his home in St. Lucas.

A funeral mass was held Thursday, Jan. 14, at 11 a.m., at St. Luke's Catholic Church in St. Lucas.

The celebrant was the Rev. Msgr. Leander Reicks with the Rev. Robert Ament concelebrating.

Lee Stammeyer was the lector. Mass servers were Bradley and Brian Schmitt. Bethany Schaufenbuel was the cross bearer.

Eucharistic ministers were Victor Croatt and Virginia Manderfield. Ushers were Dorothy and Eugene Huinker.

The music ministry was provided by Lorraine Kuennen, organist, and the St. Luke's adult choir.

The casket bearers were his sons, Carroll, Wayne, Keith, Dean, Bill, Ivan, Don and Joe Schaufenbuel.

Burial was at the St. Luke's Cemetery, with arrangements by the Burnham-Wood Funeral Home in West Union.

William was born May 21, 1918, on a farm southeast of Lawler, the son of Joseph and Anna (Langreck) Schaufenbuel. In 1941, Bill was drafted into the United States Army and served honorably until the end of World War II.

On Sept. 13, 1943, Bill was united in marriage to Marie Stammeyer of St. Lucas. They farmed near Waucoma and also owned and operated Your Choice Beef in West Union until he retired.

Bill was a member of the Rosary Society and the choir of St. Luke's parish. Also, he was a lifetime member of the American Legion.

After retirement, Bill enjoyed gardening, nature, fishing and hunting. He was an avid Chicago Cubs fan.

Survivors include his wife, Marie; eight sons and their spouses, Bill and Janice of Tripoli, Wayne and Yoshiko of Havelock, N. C., Ivan and Mary of Windon, Minn., Don of New Hampton, Dean and Ann of West Union, Joe and Lynn of Stevens Point, Wis., Carroll and Ann of St. Lucas, and Keith and Rhonda of St. Lucas; and three daughters and spouses, Lois and Phil DiPaolo of Decorah, Inez and Ed Kruse of Cresco, and Alice and Michael Hackman of Waucoma.

Also surviving are 31 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one brother, Ben Schaufenbuel of St. Lucas; and three sisters, Sister Joanna of St. Rose Convent in LaCrosse, Wis., Marian (Mrs. Leander) Stammeyer of St. Lucas and Julia Tallman of Oelwein.

Bill Schaufenbuel was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Leo, Henry and Anton; one sister, Frances (Mrs. Nick) Kuennen; infant twin sons, Thomas and John; and grandson Todd.
