Marian L. Downing, 84, of Sigourney, Iowa, formerly of West Union, died Tuesday, July 13, 2010, at University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City.

Memorial services were held Saturday, July 17, at Hope Lutheran Church in Sigourney with the Rev. Richard Meyer officiating.

Burial will be in West Union at a later date.

Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Sigourney is in charge of arrangements.

Marian L. (Steffens) Downing was born Dec. 20, 1925, in West Union. She was the daughter of John and Viola (Light) Steffens.

A 1943 graduate of West Union High School, Marian graduated from the University of Dubuque in 1947.

On Aug. 22, 1948, Marian was united in marriage with Craig Downing in West Union.

For 18 years she taught high school business education courses in Randalia, Luana, Forest City and Sigourney. She was active in the Iowa Retired School Personnel Association for 19 years and served as co-president with Craig for two years. She was also the newsletter editor for 15 years.

Marian was a member of and organist for Hope Lutheran Church, Sigourney, for many years and was involved with AARP for 20 years.

Her parents preceded her in death.

Survivors include her husband, Craig, of Sigourney; their children Cindy (Bruce) Campbell of Thorp, Wis., Jane (Danny) Fetters of Beacon, and Joni (Steve) Benz of Gardner, Kan.; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Erma Johnson of Oskaloosa; and several cousins.

A memorial fund has been established for Iowa Retired School Personnel Association.
