Richard F. Winter, 84, of Calmar, Iowa, died Sunday, July 11, 2010, at Wellington Place in Decorah.

Funeral services were held Friday, July 16, at Calmar Lutheran Church in Calmar with the Rev. Norman Bauer presiding.

Burial was in St. Peter Lutheran Cemetery in Eldorado. Military rites were conducted by Clarence Bily American Legion Post 467 of Spillville. Casket bearers were Chad Schroyer, Josh Schneider, Matt Dahlke, Barry Armstrong, Jason Schneider, Chris Bartelt, and Casey Wiltgen.

Arrangements were handled by Schluter-Balik Funeral Home, French Chapel, in Calmar.

Richard Frederick "Richie" Winter was born Feb. 21, 1926, to Walter and Lucy (Meine) Winter in Postville.

He was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Eldorado.

Richard attended Ossian Public School, Dover No. 4 country school, and West Union High School.

He served in the U.S. Army from March 8, 1945, to May 27, 1947.

On Oct. 26, 1947, Richard married Vivian Hanson, and to this union five daughters were born. The couple later divorced.

Richard married LouAnn Leuenberger Brekke on Dec. 2, 1961, in Austin, Minn., and to this union a son was born.

Richard farmed in the northeast Iowa area from 1949 to 1969. He worked as a carpenter for Black Hawk Construction in 1967-68. Over the years Richie worked on road construction for Fred Carlson Co., Reilly Construction, Roverud Construction and Wiltgen Construction.

Richie was an active member of Calmar Lutheran Church, where he served on the church council and helped with the children's group on Wednesday afternoons.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Walter and Lucy Winter; two children, Cinda Sue Winter in 1949 and Allen Winter in 1991; a granddaughter; two infant brothers, Ralph and Loren Winter; and a sister, Marcella Reinking.

Richie is survived by four daughters, Sharon (Mike) Schroyer of West Union, Linda (Larry) Larson of Liberty, Mo., Connie (Bill) Dahlke of Marshalltown, and Lisa (Gary) Schneider of Elgin; his former wife, LouAnn Winter of Calmar; a stepdaughter, Sandy (Robert) Bartelt of Calmar; 10 grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; five stepgreat-grandchildren; and a sister, Dorothy Fink of Maynard.
