Susan R. Medberry, 58, of Elgin, Iowa, died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2010, at Buchanan County Hospital, Independence, following a courageous battle with cancer.

No services are planned. A private family inurnment will be held at St. Peter Lutheran Cemetery, Eldorado, at a later date.

Leonard-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Elgin is in charge of arrangements.

Susan Rae (Gibbs) Medberry was born Feb. 9, 1952, in Manchester to Arnold and Darlene (Vagts) Gibbs.

She graduated from North High School, West Union, with the class of 1971. Susan was a graduate of Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls and earned her bachelor's degree in social work from Iowa State University.

Susan worked at H & H Foodservice and the Good Samaritan Center, both in West Union, and at Upper Iowa Co-op as a bookkeeper for many years. She also helped farmers in the area with their milking chores.

On July 23, 1988, Susan was united in marriage with Russell Medberry at Illyria Community Church, rural Elgin. Three children were born to this union.

Susan was active in Illyria Community Church and was a group leader in 4-H for many years. She also enjoyed doing crafts and photography. She loved spending time with her family and will be deeply missed.

Preceding Susan in death were her brother, Jon Gibbs; and her paternal and maternal grandparents.

Survivors include her husband, Russell Medberry of Elgin; three children, Sara Medberry of Elgin, K.J. Medberry (friend Lesleigh Miller) of Waterloo, and Katie Medberry (friend Frank Burgin) of Elgin.

Additional survivors include her parents, Arnold and Darlene Gibbs of West Union; her mother-in-law, Dora Medberry of Elgin; a sister Mary Gibbs (friend Brian) of Hiawatha; two brothers, Mike (Cindy) Gibbs of Waterville and Gary (Carol) Gibbs of West Union; and a host of other family and friends.
