A Mass of Christian Burial for Eugene L. Huinker, 86, of St. Lucas, Iowa, was celebrated by the Rev. Nicholas March Monday, Aug. 9, at St. Luke Catholic Church, St. Lucas.

Interment was in the church cemetery. Casket bearers were Eugene's grandsons Josh Bentley, Bryan Huinker, Seth Huinker, Jordan Bentley, Jacob Bentley, and Alex Bassett.

Arrangements were handled by Schluter-Balik Funeral Home, Decorah.

Eugene's death occurred Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2010, at Traditions Assisted Living in West Union after a long battle with cancer.

Eugene Louis "Gene" Huinker was born Jan. 13, 1924, on a farm near Cresco. He was the son of Arnold and Julia (Sloan) Huinker. He moved with his family to St. Lucas when he was a year old.

He attended St. Luke's Catholic School until eighth grade.

On June 15, 1954, Gene was united in marriage with Dorothy Sharp at St. Benedict's Catholic Church in Decorah.

He was self-employed as a farmer and milk hauler. He also hauled rock, lime and sand for many years before retiring at the age of 75.

Gene was a member of St. Luke Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, and served as a volunteer firefighter in St. Lucas.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dorothy "Dode," on Sept. 11, 2008; a daughter, Jane Bentley, on Oct. 11, 2009; two brothers, Louverne (Josephine) Huinker and Joe (Judy) Huinker; a sister, Evelyn (James) Molumby.

Eugene's survivors include three children, Arnie (Marilyn) Huinker of Lakeville, Minn., Kaye (Chuck) Bassett of Cedar Rapids, and Kurt (Dawn) Huinker of St. Lucas; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, and numerous other relatives.
