John Helm
John Helm, a son of John and Caroline Helm, was born at Littleport, Iowa, on June 21, 1867 and passed away at the University Hospital in Iowa City on June 25, 1945 at 4:30 A. M. His age was 78 years and 4 days.
Growing to manhood in Littleport, he learned the blacksmith's trade and pursued his chosen field of labor both at Littleport and at Edgewood. Iowa. In 1904 he moved to a farm near Rowley and later to another farm near Independence. In 1911 he came to the Oelwein community and continued farming until about 1932 when he retired to live in Oelwein.
He had four sisters and one brother, all of whom have preceded him in death. They are Mrs. Jane Brown, Mrs. Minnie Lou, Mrs. Reke McMellon, Mrs. Mary Sherrer and Charley Helm.
He is survived by his wife, Oma Helm of Oelwein, Iowa; and the following daughters and sons: Mrs. Alexander Jensen of Oelwein, Iowa, Mrs. Harry Jensen of Rowley, Iowa, Mrs. George Holtz of Edgewood, Iowa, Mrs. Ben Price of Vinton, Iowa; Dewey Helm of Franklin, Minn.; Mrs. Melvin Foust of Rowley, Iowa; Paul Helm of Shellsburg. Iowa; Marion Helm of Arlington, Iowa. One son, Clarence, preceded him in death in 1937. He is also survived by 26 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.
Services were held at the First Baptist church June 27th, 1945 at 2:30 p.m., the Rev. F. C. Witzigman officiating. Mr. Russell Brant sang "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Going Down the Valley," Mrs. R. M. Duke organist.
Internment was made in the Rowley cemetery.
