Kathryn Jo Waters

Kathryn Waters, 84, of Postville, died Wednesday, Jan. 20, 1999, at the Good Samaritan Center in Postville.

A funeral mass was held Saturday, Jan. 23, at 10:30 a.m., at St. Bridget Catholic Church in Postville, with the Rev. Leo Riley as the celebrant.

Mary Ellen Day was the lector and the mass servers were John Erickson and Kyle Klepper. Music was provided by Dave and Mary Ellen Day, and the St. Bridget Choir.

Casket bearers were Thomas Hogan, Loren Meyer, Terry Hogan, Alvin Erickson, Winfield Masonhall, Ralph Auer, David Schultz and Harry Waters.

Burial was at the Postville Cemetery. The Schutte Funeral Service handled arrangements.

Kathryn Jo (Strauch) Waters was born Dec. 1, 1914, in Elgin, the daughter of Richard and Georgia (Casper) Strauch. She graduated from Elgin High School.

On Oct. 31, 1938, she was united in marriage with Paul Raymond Waters in St. Peter's Catholic Church, Clermont. To this union, two sons were born, Thomas and Stanley.

The couple farmed south of Postville for a year and then moved to Elgin, where they worked for Kathryn's parents at the Elgin Echo. They then moved to a farm north of Postville, where they started Water's Dairy.

Later, they moved into Postville, where they started Water's Dairy and Dairy Bar, which was located on Highway 18, across from where the Casey's store and station now stands. They made their own ice cream and it was a popular spot for all the kids going to and coming from school.

For several years, Kathryn also worked in the office at Iowa Turkey Products.

Kassie was a member of St. Bridget Catholic Church in Postville and had served as vice president of the St. Bridget Rosary Society and as president of the Club of the Hour.

She also had been both president and secretary of the Progress Club in Elgin. Additionally, Kassie had belonged to several bridge clubs.

Survivors include two sons, Thomas Paul and Sharon (Schara) Waters of Grand Coulee, Wash., and Stanley Richard and Claudia (Jorgensen) Water of Hugo, Minn., four grandchildren, Natalie and Abby Waters of Hugo, Minn., Gregory and Denise Waters of Maple Valley, Wash., and Richard and Kathleen Waters of Okanogan, Wash.; and three great-grandchildren, Zachary Waters, Benjamin Waters and Brittany Waters; two sisters, Margaret Waters of Decorah, and Betty and Robert Schultz of Luana.

Also surviving are a brother-in-law, Bertie and Mabel Waters of Postville; a sister-in-law, Hazel (Mrs. Ambrose) Waters of Postville; several nieces, and nephews; and friends.

Kathryn Waters was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Paul, who died in 1996; and a brother, Hugh.
