Howard Pape

Howard Pape, 65, died Friday, Feb. 2, 2001 in Eldorado, lowa.

Funeral services were held Monday, Feb. 5 at 11 a.m. at St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church in Eldorado, with Dennis A. Hugdafil officiating.

Steve Story served as organist and Darwin Schrage was guitarist. Pallbearers were Duane Mork, Lester Steffens, Steve Meyer, John Grimes, Mike Woodson, Ray Steffens, Kenneth Meyer and Mike Ruroden.

Honorary pallbearers were Darren Pape, Alan Brockmeyer, Leo O'Hara, David Gross, Don Routh, Jerry Hebrink, Kevin Hilgerson and Les Baade.

Howard Leon Pape was born Sept. 12, 1936, the son of Henry L. and Mildred (Osmundson) Pape near Eldorado, Iowa, Dover Township.

He was baptized into the Lutheran faith Oct. 4, 1936 at St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church in Eldorado, and confirmed at St. Peter Lutheran on April 12, 1950.

Howard Pape graduated from West Union High School in 1955. He worked for Bert Hanson Engineering & Associates for two years. He served in the Army from 1959 to 1961 and worked as a cook. After returning from the
Army, he started farming near Eldorado and farmed for several years. He owned the Pape Sand and Gravel Pit.

Upon retirement from farming, Howard Pape worked for Wapsie Produce in Decorah. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, the outdoors and hunting mushrooms.

He was diagnosed with cancer in June of 2000.

Surviving Howard Pape are his companion, Sandy Larsen; two brothers, Donald and Kay Pape of Glendale, Ariz. and Daryl and Mary Pape of Hawkeye, Iowa; three sisters: Jeanette and Herbert Vagts of West Union;
Kathleen and Lawrence Traeger of Hawkeye and Donna Brockmeyer of Calmar; and several nieces and nephews.

Howard Leon Pape was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents; and one brother-in-law, Dwaine Brockmeyer.
