George Thomas "Jake" Howard, 77, of Denver, died Sunday, July 4, 2010, at the Allen Memorial Iowa, Hospital in Waterloo.

Jake was born on Jan. 24, 1933, rural Elgin, Iowa, the son of George Enos and Glennie (Peters) Howard. He was raised in rural Elgin, and graduated from the Valley High School in 1952. Jake then attended Upper Iowa University for a short time before entering the United States Army.

On May 16, 1954, Jake was united in marriage to Shirley Page at the United Methodist Church in Elgin. He was discharged from the Army and the couple made their home in Denver, Iowa in 1957. Jake then went to work for Rath Meat Packing Company in Waterloo for 31 years retiring in 1988.

He was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ, Equity Masonic Lodge A.F. & A.M. 131 in Janesville, Denver Community Club, and Acker-Mathias American Legion Post 653 in Denver. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, golfing, gambling, playing cards, watching sports, especially the Iowa Hawkeye's and New York Yankee's, and camping and spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Jake's memory is honored by his three children, Terrie (Randy) Thurm of Denver, Iowa, Kevin (Deb) Howard of Horicon, Wis., and Tammy (Jeff) Rieckenberg of Waverly; seven grandchildren, Megan (Brandon) Smith, Ryan Thurm, Tony (Danette) Pint, Ashley (Scott) Schweiger, Angela Howard, Lindsey Loy and Levi Loy; four great-grandchildren, Rowen, Dalton, Staci and Blake; a special friend, Gerry Wilharm of Oelwein; a sister, Viola and Johnny Metzger of West Union; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, son Jeffrey Howard, daughter-in-law Donna Howard, two sisters, Opal Baker and Geraldine Olson; several half-brothers, and a half-sister.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 9, at St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Denver with Pastor Linda Myren officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Denver with the Acker-Mathias American Legion giving honors.

Visitation will be held Thursday, July 8, at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Denver where the family will greet friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society or St. Paul's United Church of Christ.
