Kerry J. Halva-Cash, 40, of West Union, Iowa, died of a pulmonary embolism on Tuesday, June 15, 2010, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 18, at United Methodist Church, West Union. The Rev. Scott Keele Kober officiated.
Interment was in the West Union Cemetery. Casket bearers were Lloyd Wurzer, Brett Root, Aaron Salvo, Mike Geiger, Don Krull, and Mathew Krull.
Burnham-Wood Funeral Home, West Union, was in charge of arrangements.
Kerry Jeanne Halva-Cash was born Dec. 5, 1969, in Waterloo to Gary and Karen (Gulick) Halva.
She graduated from North Fayette High School in 1988. In 1992, Kerry graduated from Cornell College in Mt. Vernon with a BA in English and art history. She was a member of Kappa Delta Chi.
In March 1995 Kerry married William Cash.
In 1996 she was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy and received a heart transplant at the University of Minnesota Hospital on Dec. 21, 1997.
After recovering from her surgery, Kerry was active in the "Iowa's Child" fostering program, fostering several children and then adopting her two sons, Danny and Tracy.
After she and Bill were divorced in 2005, Kerry moved to West Union, where she continued in the fostering program and adopted her two daughters, Savannah and Caroline.
On Jan. 16, 2010, Kerry became engaged to Mathew Krull, and they were planning a July 3 wedding.
Kerry was a devoted mother to her four children and enjoyed participating in their many activities. She loved crafting and often did projects with her children.
Kerry also organized an after-school program at West Union United Methodist Church, was an avid reader and collector, enjoyed gardening and loved flowers.
Preceding her in death were grandparents Rudy and Dortha Halva and Wayne Gulick, and her brother, Tracy.
Those left to cherish her memory are her parents, Gary and Karen Halva of West Union, her fiancé, Mathew Krull of West Union; her four children, Danny, Tracy, Savannah and Caroline, all at home; a sister, Jessica (Aaron) Salvo of Queen Creek, Ariz.; her grandmother, Jeanne Gulick of Vinton; many aunts, uncles, cousins and other relatives.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family.
