Dr. Earl H. Antes, 92, of Evansville, Ind., formerly of West Union, Iowa, passed away Monday, June 14, 2010, at Holiday Village.

Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 17, at Old North United Methodist Church, 4201 Stringtown Road, Evansville, Ind. The Rev. Mike Monahan and Rev. Janet Kelley officiated.

Entombment took place at Alexander Memorial Park.

Alexander Funeral Home in Evansville was in charge of arrangements.

Earl H. Antes was born in West Union on Sept. 29, 1917. He was the son of Judge W.H. and Ruby Antes.

He was a graduate of West Union High School.

Dr. Antes graduated from University of Iowa Medical School in 1941. He served his internship at University of Wisconsin Medical School, returning to the University of Iowa for his residency in internal medicine.

In 1945 he began his practice at Welborn Clinic and was the last surviving founding partner.

From 1955-57 Dr. Antes was the Chief of Cardiology and the Assistant Chief of Medicine at the Army hospital at Ft. Belvoir, Va. He returned and resumed his practice in Evansville in 1957, at which time he became a Fellow in the American College of Physicians.

During his medical career Dr. Antes served as president of Welborn Hospital Medical Staff, was a diplomat of the Board of Internal Medicine, served as the regional representative of the American Group Practice Association, and was a member of the Vanderburgh County Medical Society.

Dr. Antes was a member of the Evansville Astronomical Society, served as president of the East Side Kiwanis Club, and "General" of the local Civil War Round Table.

His musical interests included performing with the University of Evansville Savoyards Ltd. and singing as an active member of the choirs at Methodist Temple, Aldersgate, and Old North United Methodist churches.

Preceding Dr. Antes in death were his wife, Gayle Mitchell Antes, in 1989 and his brother, Charles Antes, in 2000.

Earl is survived by his daughters, Deborah (Tom) Lamm of Denver, Colo., and Pam (Al) Bailey of New Albany, Ind.; his sons, Tom (Janie) Antes of Evansville, Ind., Randy (Lesley) Antes of New York, N.Y.; and a brother, Richard Antes of Albuquerque, N.M.

Additional survivors include his grandchildren Julie Bates of New Albany, Ind., Megan Stewart of Sellersburg, Ind., Erin Thomas of New Albany, Ind., Ryan Antes of Evansville, Ind., Jon Antes of San Diego, Calif., and Kellie Antes of Boston, Mass.; five great-grandchildren; his companion of 19 years, Helen Bliss Halpern, MD.

Also surviving are several nieces and nephews, including Jon (Michelle) Antes of West Union.

The family would like to extend their special thanks to Heritage Hospice and the Pastoral staff of Old North United Methodist Church.
