Katherine I. Jones, 80, of West Union, Iowa, died Sunday, May 23, 2010, at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in LaCrosse, Wis.

A memorial service was held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 27, at Zion Lutheran Church, West Union. The Rev. David Grant and the Rev. Stacey Nalean-Carlson officiated.

Honorary pallbearers were George Woodard, Vern Alcorn, Blake Brown, Steve Drewes, Tom Buresh and Willys Fritz.

The Cremation Society of Eastern Iowa was in charge of arrangements.

Katherine Irene (Smith) Jones was born Sept. 14, 1929, in Oelwein to Charles and Irene (Lenius) Smith.

She graduated from Oelwein High School in 1947 and from Wartburg College in 1951.

Katherine taught school at West Union High School, Northeast Iowa Community College, served as an elementary special ed. associate, and taught adult tailoring classes.

On May 30, 1954, she married Norman W. Jones in Oelwein.

Katherine was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in West Union, P.E.O. Chapter DB, West Union Community Library Board, was formerly a member of Palmer Hospital Auxiliary, West Union Good Samaritan Center Board, and Wednesday Art Club.

She enjoyed reading, sewing, gardening, and spending time with family.

Katherine was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Howard Smith.

Survivors include Norman, her husband of 56 years; three daughters, Deborah (David) Lutyen of Canton, Ohio, Kathleen (Wayne) Abrahamson of Boone, and Nancy (Claude Brinson) of Omaha, Neb.; grandsons Vincent and Craig Abrahamson; a brother, Roger Smith; and several nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Zion Lutheran Church Endowment or West Union Community Library.
