A Mass of Christian Burial for Irene V. Easton, 94, of West Union will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 26, at Holy Name Catholic Church, West Union.

Following dinner, burial will take place in the cemetery in Strawberry Point.

Visitation will be held at Burnham-Wood Funeral Home, West Union, on Friday, June 25, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The public is also invited to a Celebration of Life memorial service, which will follow at 8 p.m. that evening at the Holy Name Parish Center.

Irene died of natural causes Wednesday, June 16, 2010, at Good Samaritan Center - West Union, where she had been a resident since suffering a stroke in November 2003.

Irene Veronica (Burke) Easton was born Jan. 11, 1916, in Tripp County, S.D. She was the fourth of 10 children of homesteaders Frank and Josephine (Raders) Burke.

Irene was valedictorian of the Class of 1934 in Strawberry Point.

She and her sisters played basketball and were waitresses in their parents' restaurant.

Irene taught school briefly before marrying Howard Easton on Aug. 17, 1934. The couple lived in several towns in northeast Iowa, raising a family of nine children. They settled in West Union in 1962, when Howard took over the Culligan dealership.

Irene was active in church activities, along with the Palmer Lutheran Hospital Auxiliary, local cancer drives, and the Welcome Wagon.

Gardening, cooking, playing cards and visiting family occupied her later years.

She will be remembered by all for her energy, her generosity, and her exceptional gracious and caring manner.

Irene rejoins her husband, William Howard Easton, who died in 1985; son John, 2000; grandson Richard Easton, 2005; sons-in-law Tony Kucera, 1994 and Roger Geraghty, 2010; her parents; and siblings Harold Burke, Marguerite Burrack, Dorothy Miersen, Kathleen Glab and Marie Cook.

Left to cherish her memory are children Sharlene Geraghty of Hastings, Minn., Mary Ann Kucera of Traer, Chuck (Barb) Easton of Davenport, Judy (Frank) Trumpy of Ames, Bill (Joanne) Easton of Barrington, Ill., Therese (Don) Roth of Denver, Colo., Doug (Jane) Easton of West Union, and Randy (Dodie) Easton of Cedar Rapids; 28 grandchildren; and 38 great-grandchildren.

Additional survivors include Irene's siblings Rosemary Dunn of Strawberry Point, Dr. Robert (Rose Mary) Burke of Jefferson, Vincent (Joanne) Burke of Davenport, and Ed (Janis) Burke of Greenbrae, Calif.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Good Samaritan Society - West Union.
