James Davis passed away Tuesday afternoon at his home in the east part of town. Mr. Davis who was 85 years 8 months and five days old has been able to get about the greater part of the itme although rather feeble, it was a gradual loosing of strength day by day without apparently suffering, just slipping away until the end came and he was called to join his wife in the great beyond.

Mr. Davis' father and mother were of Welch descent and came to this country, first settling in Elkader and later moving to Illyria township to make their home.

James Davis was united in marriage to Miss Naomi Smith in 1865 and settled on a farm in Illyria township where they made their home until about twenty five years ago they moved to Fayette which has since been their home.

Three daughters, Misses Joan and Sarah at home and Miss Hannah, now Mrs. Hannah Dawson of San Francisco, Calif.; and five sons, Frank on a farm west of Fayette, Josiah in California, Silas who owns and operates the home farm in Illyria township, Harry of South Dakota and Oakley.

Mrs. Davis died July 11, 1919. They were members of the Methodist church, always faithful in their attendance when health and weather permitted. Since the death of his wife, the daughters have been faithful in the care of their father.

The eight children are left to mourn the death of their loved parents. Miss Joan, a foreign missionary was in India at the time of her mother's passing, also she left a few weeks ago for San Francisco where she was when her father died. She was notified and arrived in Fayette Friday morning.

The last services were held Saturday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock from the Methodist church, Rev. Clyde E. Baker, his pastor, had charge of the services, reading the scripture lesson, prayer by Rev. F.M. Parker, also he read the obituary which was followed by a short sermon by Rev. Baker and interment was in the family lot in Grandview cemetery.
