Alan Franzen

Alan Franzen, 41, of Fredericksburg, died Sunday, June 27, 1999, near Highway 63, west of Fredericksburg, as the result of a bicycle/semi-truck accident.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 30, at 10:30 a.m., at Holy Name Catholic Church in West Union, with burial at the Rose Hill Cemetery, Fredericksburg.

The Burnham-Wood Funeral Home of West Union handled arrangements.

Alan was born Oct. 26, 1957, at New Hampton, the son of Leo and Helen Franzen. He graduated from North Fayette High School in 1976.

On Dec. 4, 1976, he married Kim King at Holy Name Catholic Church. He operated a dairy farm near Hawkeye before moving to Fredericksburg in 1992. He worked at AMPI for several years and also milked cows at HMCI. Alan had currently been employed at Beatrice Cheese Inc.

He and his son, Matthew, were planning to ride in RAGBRAI, as they did last year. Alan was a member of Knights of Columbus, was a 4-H leader and had received the FFA Iowa Farmer Award.

Survivors include his wife, Kim; five children, Toni Marie and Kristi Kay, both of Pella; and Matthew John, Noel Ann and Merri Christa, all at home; his parents, Leo and Helen Franzen of West Union; five brothers, Michael of Camden, Ark., Brian of Houstonia, Mo., Bruce of West Union, and Lester and Carl, both of Minneapolis, Minn.; five sisters, Magdalen (Dennis) O'Brien of Elk Run Heights, Amy (Floyd) Hemesatth of Petersburg, Va., Brenda (Monte) McDanel of Boone, Laura (Reggie) Lubka of Postville, and Karen Samuelson of Spring Grove, Minn.; and his wife's parents, Earl and Evelyn King of Fredericksburg.

Alan Franzen was preceded in death by his grandparents, Mike and Clara Franzen, and John and Helen Moellers.
