Walter's death occurred from complications of pneumonia at Covenant Hospital in Waterloo on Sunday, April 11, 2010.

Walter Phillip Fisher, son of Carl and Lorraine (Huber) Fisher, was born March 10, 1960, in New Hampton. He spent his first 10 years on the family farm north of Lawler. There he was a big brother to his younger sister, Mary Jo, and a little brother to his five older brothers and one older sister.

He attended school at Turkey Valley Community School.

In 1970, Walter moved with his family to West Union, where he attended North Fayette schools.

Though he suffered from numerous health problems throughout his 50 years, Walter was always happy to be with his family.

He had the wonderful gift of curiosity and loved to ask questions. He would engage everyone he met in conversation, had an advanced vocabulary, and liked to be called a "good conversationalist." He had an amazing memory and could remember all of his siblings' phone numbers and relatives' birthdays.

Walter was his mother's companion during his adult life. They would attend church, say daily prayers, and enjoyed visiting family.

In 2006, the deteriorating health of his mother, as well as his own health, made it necessary to move to Country View Nursing Facility near Waterloo.

Walter's mother passed away in 2007 and he missed her tremendously. He stayed in touch with family, calling one or more siblings daily. He enjoyed outings to movies, shopping, and family gatherings such as weddings.

His aunt, Ethel Mae, and her children were wonderful about visiting and including him. He was always the uncle with the big "bear hug" and funny jokes. He would end every phone conversation with "I like you, and I love you, too."

Walter was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Joseph; and many aunts and uncles.

Those left to cherish his memory are his siblings and their spouses: Jerry of West Union, Jim (Janelle) of Moville, John of St. John's Mich., Bob (Susan) of Toddville, Marty (Judy) of West Union, Liz (David) Robinson of Colo, and Mary Jo (Marty) Miller of Calmar; two aunts, Phyllis Lechtenberg of Festina and Ethel Mae (Kenneth) Schneberger of New Hampton; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
