Mrs. MATTIA (Marguerite Wirz) ZURBRIGGEN

Funeral services were held Friday, June 17 at 1:30 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, Elgin, for Marguerite Zurbriggen, 86, who died at the Community Memorial Hospital, Postville, Wednesday, June 15, 1977.

The daughter of Gottlieb and Maria Bigler Wirz, Marguerite was born January 11, 1891, in Bern, Switzerland. She attended school and worked as a secretary in Bern. At age 17 she went to London, England and was employed as a private French tutor and governess.

April 9, 1910, she was married to Mattia Zurbriggen in the Salvation Army church in London.

In 1913, Mrs. Zurbriggen and her husband came to the United States and farmed in the Clermont-Elgin area until 1925. They operated a bakery in Elgin from 1926-41 and one in Sumner from 1941 until their retirement. The Zurbriggens continued to live in Sumner until 1975. She and her husband were current residents of the Good Samaritan Home in Postville.

Survivors include her husband, Mattia; two sons, Paul of Elgin and Gordon of Darien, Conneticut; a daughter, Mrs. Elaine Knight of Postville; 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by 11 brothers and sisters and a daughter, Eda Weible of Chicago.

Interment was in the Elgin Cemetery.
