LaVanda Bernice Walvatne 1932 - 2010

Funeral services for LaVanda B. Walvatne, 77, of West Union, Iowa, were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 30, at Burnham-Wood Funeral Home, West Union. Officiating were Eric McCullough and Robert Orr.

Interment was in the West Union Cemetery. Terry Smid, Jamie Smid, Bobby Smid, Grant Walvatne, Steve Walvatne and Dennis Walvatne were the casket bearers.

Burnham-Wood Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

LaVanda had been admitted to Palmer Lutheran Health Center, West Union, approximately a week ago. She was then transferred to Allen Hospital in Waterloo, where her death occurred on Friday, March 27, 2010.

Born June 29, 1932, on a farm near Castalia, LaVanda Bernice Walvatne was the daughter of George and Annie (Torkelson) Walvatne.

She was a lifelong West Union-area resident. After she graduated from West Union High School, LaVanda worked for a few years at Cowie Photo Studio in West Union. She later worked for many years at Dick's Cleaners in West Union until she retired.

In October 1952, LaVanda trusted the Lord Jesus Christ as her Savior. She was baptized and received into fellowship at the West Union Gospel Hall, where she faithfully attended services.

Traveling, sewing, music, working on her computer, and entertaining family and friends were among LaVanda's favorite pastimes.

Preceding her in death were her parents; three brothers, Norris, Vernal, and Adrian in infancy; three sisters, Gladys Wardell, Marian Walvatne and Helen Smid; and two brothers-in-law, Willard Peck and Harold Wardell.

Those left to cherish LaVanda's memory include two sisters, Hazel Walvatne of West Union and Arlene Peck of Marion; a brother, Harold (Betty) Walvatne of Waterloo; a sister-in-law, June Walvatne of Hawkeye; a brother-in-law, Robert Smid of West Union; several nieces and nephews.
