Thomas James Cannon, son of deceased Sarah and James Cannon of Oelwein, Iowa, was born Feb 22, 1886, and departed this life January 24, 1944, at the age of 57 years, 11 months, 24 days. He was united in marriage to Alta Mae Simpson January 22, 1907, at Sacred Heart church, Oelwein, Iowa.

To this union four children were born, all of whom survive. They are James of Oelwein, Mrs. Earl McGarvey of Mason City, Iowa, Mary Catherine and Helen Joan at home.

Together with the wife and four children there are left to mourn his going three sisters, Mrs. Mary Costelia of Great Falls, Montana; Mrs. A. A. Williams of St. Paul, Minnesota; and Mrs. Wm. Callies of Kansas City, Missouri; two grandchildren, Tommy Cannon of Oelwein and Patrick McGarvey of Mason City, Ia. Three brothers having preceded him in death.

Mr. Cannon had been an employee of the Chicago Great Western for nearly 44 years starting as a boy of 14 working as callboy after school, and later as a fireman and brakeman, since 1912 had been an engineer in which capacity he was employed at the time of his death.

Mr. Cannon was a devoted husband and father. A lifelong resident of Oelwein and a friend to everyone with whom he came in contact, he will be missed not only by his family but by all those who knew him.

He was a member of the Sacred Heart church, the Knights of Columbus, and The Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers of which he had been local chairman for the past year.

Services were from Sacred Heart church January 27, Rev. E. J. O'Hagan officiated. John Dahl beautifully sang Veni Jesu and I Need Thee Gracious Jesus.

Casket bearers: E. R. O'Brien, Ed Bishop, Wilbur Morrison, A. N. Engstrom, Joe Conley and Bates Hanken.

He was laid to rest at Woodlawn cemetery.
