Kathryn B. Hinsenbrock, 97, of West Union, Iowa, died of age-related causes Friday, March 5, 2010, at Palmer Lutheran Health Center, West Union.

A Funeral Mass was celebrated by the Rev. Dale Rausch at 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 8, at Holy Name Catholic Church, West Union.

Interment was in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, rural West Union. Casket bearers were Alan Lansing, Brian Whittle, John Baldwin, Neil Lansing, Paul Kaiser, Tom Grapes and Jason Moellers.

Arrangements were handled by Burnham-Wood Funeral Home, West Union.

Kathryn Beatrice Hinsenbrock, daughter of Herman John and Rosa (Berns) Hinsenbrock, was born July 1, 1912, in Hillsboro, Ill.

She was baptized Aug. 4, 1912, at St. Agnes Church in Hillsboro and confirmed her faith at Holy Name Catholic Church in West Union in 1924.

Kathryn attended elementary country school in Dover and Union townships in Fayette County and graduated from West Union High School in 1929. She graduated from St. Teresa College in Winona, Minn., in 1933, received her master's degree from the University of Iowa in 1944, and completed an additional year of graduate school beyond her master's.

Kathryn's career began at St. Adrian's High School in Adrian, Minn., where she taught from 1933-1936. She was the high school principal in Lyle, Minn., from 1936-1940 and in St. Ansgar, Ia., from 1940-1942. Kathryn taught ninth-grade algebra in Austin, Minn., from 1942-1943 and was head of the mathematics department at Charles City High School from 1943-1977.

She was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters of the Americas, I.C.B.V.M. Chapter of Lay Carmelites, and Phi Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma International.

Kathryn enjoyed living on her farm and working in her yard and garden.

Preceding her in death were her parents; three sisters, Virginia Meskel, Evelyn Reinecke and Mary Gorsche; and her adopted brother, Richard Hinsenbrock.

Those left to cherish Kathryn's memory are her two sisters, Helen Molumby of West Union and Isabelle Gay of Madrid; several nieces and nephews; and special friend Diann Cline of West Union.
