Helen Jean Smid 1936 - 2010

Helen J. Smid, 74, of West Union, Iowa, died of cancer Wednesday morning, Feb. 24, 2010, at her home.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Feb. 27, at Burnham-Wood Funeral Home, West Union. Al Christopherson and Russ Nesbit presided.

Interment was in the West Union Cemetery. Casket bearers were Terry Smid, Jamie Smid, Bobby Smid, Lester Sass Jr., Andrew Sass, and Daryl Walvatne.

Arrangements were handled by Burnham-Wood Funeral Home, West Union.

Helen Jean (Walvatne) Smid, daughter of George S. and Annie H. (Torkelson) Walvatne, was born Feb. 19, 1936, in West Union.

On Nov. 9, 1949, Helen trusted the Lord Jesus Christ as her Savior. She was baptized and received into fellowship at the West Union Gospel Hall, where she faithfully attended services.

A graduate of West Union High School, Helen was a lifelong West Union area resident. In earlier years she worked for Cowie Photo Studio.

On June 9, 1964, Helen was united in marriage with Robert Smid in West Union. Four children were born to this union, and she devoted herself to her family as a homemaker.

Helen enjoyed music, reading the Bible, taking pictures of the family, gardening, flowers, entertaining family and friends, and working on the computer.

Preceding her in death were her parents; three brothers, Norris and Vernal Walvatne and Adrian in infancy; two sisters, Gladys Wardell and Marian Walvatne; and two brothers-in-law, Willard Peck and Harold Wardell.

Those left to cherish her memory are her husband, Robert Smid of West Union; four children, Terry Smid of West Union, Bobby Smid of Waterloo, Jamie (Jenny) Smid of Dunkerton and Annie (Lester) Sass Jr. of West Union; three sisters, Arlene Peck of Marion, LaVanda Walvatne and Hazel Walvatne, both of West Union; a brother, Harold (Betty) Walvatne of Waterloo; her sister-in-law, June Walvatne of Hawkeye; seven grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
