William Anson Gardner 1877 - 1944

William Anson Gardner was
born Aug. 9, 1877 near. New
Hampton, Iowa, the youngest son
of Babe and Mary Gardner. His
entire life was spent in Fayette
county.
On Jan. 3rd, 1900 he was united
in marriage to Alice May Hastings,
and to this union were born
eight children, two having died in
infancy and a son Paul who was
accidentally killed at the age of
19. Those who survive him besides
his widow are three daughters
and two sons, Mrs. Marie
Everett and Mrs. Pauline Mitchell
of Waterloo: Mrs.Helen Freeman
of Richmond. Calif.: Kenneth of
Cedar Rapids, and Bill Jr. at home.
Ten grandchildren and two great
grandchildren, seven brother and
two sisters also survive.
He was a member of the First
Presbyterian church, having been
baptized in that faith.
In 1903 he moved from Wadena
to Oelwein with his wife and one
child and began working for the
C. G. W. railroad at which he.
gave faithful service for 26 years.
He worked in many departments
until at the time of his sickness
when he was compelled to retire
he was a train inspector.
Mr. Gardner underwent an operation
at Iowa City May 18. He
was able to return to his home
but never fully recovered.
Funeral services were held -at
2 p. m. from the Presbyterian
church Saturday. Aug. 12, Rev.
Jean Hauter officiating. Music
was furnished by Mrs. Helen Hilsebeck.
Mrs. Courtright and Miss
Ethel Oberfell. A duet was sung
by Rev and Mrs. Sterling Stewart.
Pallbearers were Jess Roe,
Fred Wilson. Delbert Woodward,
Dominic Gallo. Alvin Jahncke
and Merle Abbott- Final resting
place was in Woodlawn cemetery.
