Almon H. Ames 1850-1923

AMES, THURMAN, WODLEY, WHITESIDE

Alumon H. Ames, son.of Mr. and Mrs.
Thurman Ames was born near Potsdam,
St. Lawrence county. New York,
December 26, 1850. Here he spent his
early childhood to eight years of age.
At this time his father with his family
moved to Kane county, Illinois, where
he grew to manhood, spending his
early life on a. farm and he attended
the public schools.
He remained in Illinois until 1876,
when he came to Fayette county,
Iowa, and located in Scott township
where he spent thirty years as a successful
farmer. In 1907 he moved to
Oelwein where he lived until two
years ago when he went to Sycamore,
Illinois and there he passed away
June 1, 1923.
On January 2fl, 1873 be was united
in marriage to Hannah Wodley, of
Kane County, Illinois. To this union
three children were born Elva, Wesley
and Earl, all survive him.
In April 1912 Mr. Ames united with
the Church of Christ in Oelwein, Iowa
during a meeting conducted by Evangelist
Arthur Long. He remained a
member of this church until his death.
He leaves to mourn his loss his
wife, three children, Mrs. Elva Whiteside
of Clarion, Iowa; Wesley Ames
of Minnesota, and Earl Ames of Oelwein,
Iowa. Seven grandchildren, two
brothers, Oliver Ames of Kansas and
Eugene Ames of California; and two
sisters .Adaline and Edith both of
Kansas.
Mr. Ames had been an active man
up to about two years ago when his
health began to fail him and the last
three months he was confined to his
room and bed most of the time.
Funeral services were held from
the Christian Church, 2:30 Lord's Day
June 3rd by the pastor. Interred to
rest in Woodlawn cemetery.
