Carl George Gehring 1897-1989

Carl George Gehring, son of Edward and Louise (Beer) Gehring, was born September 26, 1897, in Illyria Township, rural Wadena, IA. He was baptized and confirmed in the Illyria Community Church, Elgin. After graduating from high school, Carl continued his education at the Iowa State University, Ames, with studies in Animal Husbandry.

On December 28, 1921, Carl was united in marriage to Grace Aeschliman at Wadena. To this union were born four children. Carl farmed near Wadena. He was a director for the Wadena Creamery, a director for the Farm Bureau, served on the board for Illyria Community Church, played the violin and organized a band.

At the time of his death, Carl was a resident of the Solon Nursing Care Center. Preceding him in death were his parents; his sister, Mabel Johnson, and a granddaughter, Debbie Baumgartner.

Carl is survived by his wife, Grace, a resident of the Solon Care Center; two sons: Leroy of Marion and Lowell of Elwood, NE; two daughters: Mrs. Maurice (Marian) Cook of Waterloo and Mrs. Lloyd (Ruth) Baumgartner of Iowa City; 15 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; four step great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; one brother, Lester Gehring, Elgin; two sisters: Mrs. Florence Heyer of West Union and Mrs. Marie Probert of Wadena and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service was held Monday, Sept. 25, 11 a.m. at Illyria Community Church, rural Elgin. Rev. Richard Kretzschmar officiated. Burial was in the Illyria Cemetery, rural Elgin. Pallbearers were Todd Baumgartner, Dennis, Roger and Mike Gehring, and Charles and Donald Williams.
Burnham-Wood Funeral Home, West Union was in charge of arrangements.
